Video Upscaling

Video upscaling uses AI to raise a video's resolution and recover detail — 720p to 4K without the blur. Learn how it works and which footage suits it.

Video upscaling is the process of increasing a video's resolution — say from 720p or 1080p to 4K — while reconstructing the detail that a plain resize would smear. Traditional scaling just stretches existing pixels, so edges go soft and compression artifacts get bigger. AI upscaling instead predicts what the sharper frame should look like, restoring texture, edges, and faces frame by frame.

How it works

An upscaling model is trained on pairs of low- and high-resolution footage, so it learns what fine detail looks like once it has been downscaled or crushed by compression. At run time it analyzes each frame together with its neighbors — motion across frames is extra evidence about what a blurry edge really is — and generates new pixels that stay consistent over time, which is what keeps the result from flickering. Dedicated variants specialize: one restores facial features, one is tuned to the flat colors and clean lines of animation, others focus on removing grain or sharpening soft focus.

What it's best at

  • Delivering AI-generated video at 4K — most generators output 720p or 1080p; upscale the keeper before publishing.
  • Reviving old footage — phone videos, downloads, and archive clips that were shot or saved small.
  • Cleaning compressed clips — remove blockiness and grain from heavily re-encoded material.
  • Recovering faces — interviews and talking-head shots where the face is the whole point.

What a good input includes

Start from the best copy you have: the original export beats a re-downloaded version. Match the mode to the footage — Standard for live-action and AI-generated clips, Anime for animation, Face for people, Denoise for grainy low-light shots, Sharpen for soft focus. Keep clips short and pick a target that fits the destination: 1080p for social, 4K for a big screen. Upscaling adds detail but cannot invent what was never there, so a 240p clip will improve, not become native 4K.

Questions about Video Upscaling

Is video upscaling free?

Every account gets 1 free Standard upscale a day for clips up to 10 seconds. Longer clips and Pro quality are billed per second of source video by output resolution, from 2 credits per second, shown before you start.

Which mode should I choose?

Standard for live-action and AI-generated footage, Anime for animation, Face for talking heads, Denoise for grainy low-light shots, and Sharpen for soft focus. When in doubt, start with Standard.
