Image-to-Video (I2V)

July 11, 2026
Image-to-video (I2V) is an AI technique that animates a still image into a video clip, using your image as the first frame. Learn how it works and when to use it.
AI Video

Image-to-video (I2V) is a generative AI technique that brings a still image to life. You provide a picture — a product shot, a portrait, an illustration — and the model generates a video that starts from that exact image and sets it in motion, guided by an optional text prompt.

How it works

In image-to-video generation, your image is used as the first frame — a visual anchor the model must honor. From there, a video diffusion model predicts how the scene should evolve: hair moves in the wind, steam rises from the cup, the camera slowly pushes in. The text prompt no longer needs to describe what things look like (the image already says that); it describes what happens next.

Why start from an image?

Compared with text-to-video, starting from an image gives you something precious: control over the exact look. The composition, the colors, the face, the product label — all locked in from frame one. This makes I2V the go-to mode when:

  • You have brand assets — animate a product photo without the model reinventing your packaging.
  • The subject must be exact — a real person, a real place, existing artwork or illustration.
  • You want predictability — the first frame is fixed, so iterations only vary the motion.

Prompting tips

Since the image handles the "what," spend your prompt on the "how": describe the motion (subtle, dramatic, looping), the camera (static, slow push-in, orbit), and the atmosphere you want to develop. Short, motion-focused prompts usually beat long scene descriptions here. More techniques in our prompt writing guide.

Image-to-video on Molyin

Molyin's Seedance 2.0 generator supports image-to-video with 5 or 10 second clips, up to 1080p resolution, six aspect ratios, optional audio, and seed control — upload an image, describe the motion, and generate.

  • Text-to-Video — generate video from a written prompt alone.
  • Reference-to-Video — use images as identity references rather than the literal first frame.
