01 Core Formula

Suno 5.5 responds best to a compact scene: genre, mood, and where the music lives. You don't need producer vocabulary — a plain sentence with the right nouns beats a wall of adjectives.

1.1 The Basic Prompt Formula

Start with three required parts — genre, mood, and scene — then season with instruments, tempo, or era. Write it like you're briefing a session musician, not tagging a photo.

[Genre] + [Mood] + [Scene] + optional [Instruments] [Tempo] [Era]

Required

Genre

The musical lane: synth-pop, lo-fi hip hop, cinematic orchestral. One clear genre beats three vague ones.

Required

Mood

The emotional target: melancholic, euphoric, tense, cozy.

Required

Scene

Where it plays: a rainy night drive, a sunrise run, a late-night coding session.

Optional

Instruments

Name the leads: fingerpicked guitar, analog synth pads, brushed drums.

Optional

Tempo

Slow burn, mid-tempo groove, driving 140 BPM — pace sets energy.

Optional

Era

A decade anchor: 1980s synth-pop, 90s boom bap, modern hyperpop.

Lo-fi Study Beats

Prompt

Lo-fi hip hop for late-night studying — mellow and warm, vinyl crackle, soft electric piano chords, slow swung drums, a rainy window mood.

Genre + scene + texture in one sentence. Preloaded with instrumental on — no vocal line fighting your focus playlist.

1.2 Mood, Texture and Scale

Suno reads scale words literally: 'intimate' stays small, 'stadium' goes wide. Texture words — gritty, glassy, airy — steer the mix more than genre tags do.

Epic Cinematic Build

Prompt

Epic cinematic orchestral — a lone cello motif over taiko drums, building to a full brass climax. Vast, heroic, end-of-trailer energy.

Scale words do the heavy lifting: 'lone' then 'full brass' gives the arrangement an arc. Instrumental stays on so the mix stays clean.

02 Custom Mode: Full Control

Flip on Custom mode and Suno 5.5 hands you the producer's chair: title, style, your own lyrics, vocal gender, and exact length. Non-custom is for speed; custom is for intent.

2.1 The Custom Formula

Custom mode needs three things: a title, a style description, and lyrics. The style field replaces the free-form prompt — keep it about sound, not story.

[Title] + [Style] + [Lyrics] + optional [Vocal Gender] [Duration]

Required

Title

The song's name — it anchors the chorus hook and identity.

Required

Style

Pure sound direction: genre, instrumentation, production era. No story here.

Required

Lyrics

Your words with structure tags. This is the vocal blueprint.

Optional

Vocal Gender

Male or female lead — changes the whole register of the track.

Optional

Duration

10 to 360 seconds. Short for loops and stings, long for full arrangements.

Synth-pop Anthem (Custom Mode)

Prompt

Style: Synth-pop, 1980s, driving bassline, bright synth pads Title: Neon Skyline [Verse 1] We lit the city with a borrowed spark Running through the wires in the after-dark [Chorus] Neon skyline, hold the line We were never built to fade with time Neon skyline, shine on shine Every heartbeat electric tonight

Preloaded in custom mode — female vocal, 120 seconds. The style field is pure sound direction; the title anchors the hook.

2.2 Vocal Gender and Length

Vocal gender is a mix decision, not an afterthought — a folk ballad sits differently on a male baritone than a female alto. And duration is a real lever: a 30-second sting and a 3-minute ballad are different arrangements, not the same song trimmed.

Acoustic Ballad, Male Vocal

Prompt

Style: Acoustic folk ballad, fingerpicked guitar, soft strings Title: Quiet Harbor [Verse 1] The tide came in without a sound I watched the boats spin slowly round [Chorus] Quiet harbor, hold me now The storm is done, I made it somehow

Male vocal, 180 seconds — enough room for two verses and a bridge. Change the gender toggle and the same song lands in a different register.

03 Lyrics: Structure Tags and the AI Writer

Suno's lyric engine reads structure tags as arrangement instructions. [Verse], [Chorus], [Bridge] and friends aren't decoration — they decide where the energy goes.

3.1 Structure Tags as Arrangement

Tag every section. The chorus is where the hook lives — write it short and repeatable. Verses carry the story; the bridge is your one chance to break the pattern before the final chorus.

Fully Tagged Pop Song

Prompt

[Intro] Soft synth arpeggio [Verse 1] Every window in this town of light Throws your shadow back at night [Pre-Chorus] And I keep counting down the floors [Chorus] City of glass, nothing lasts We were beautiful and built to crash City of glass, moving fast Hold me like we're never looking back [Bridge] If the skyline falls, let it fall slow [Outro] Glass and glow, letting go

Preloaded in custom mode with title and style filled. Five tag types — the arrangement follows the tags, so the bridge gets its own lift before the outro.

3.2 No Words? The AI Lyric Writer

The built-in lyric writer takes a one-line theme and drafts two complete lyric sets — pick one, edit any line, generate. It costs 1 credit for both drafts and saves the blank-page hour.

From Theme to Full Lyrics

Prompt

A nostalgic song about childhood summers in a small coastal town

This is a lyric-writer topic, not a generation prompt. Open the AI lyric writer (sparkles icon on the Lyrics box), paste this theme, and pick from two drafted lyric sets.

04 Instrumental and Length Control

Instrumental mode strips the vocal line entirely — no lyrics needed, no accidental singing. Combined with the duration slider it's the fastest way to score content.

4.1 Pure Instrumentals

With the instrumental switch on, the lyrics box disappears and the prompt carries everything. Be more specific about arrangement than you would for a vocal track — there's no singer to hold attention.

Ambient Focus Pad

Prompt

Ambient instrumental for deep focus — warm analog pads, a slow pulsing sub, distant piano notes every few bars. No drums, no melody hooks, just space.

Instrumental on, and the prompt explicitly says what to leave out. Absence is arrangement.

4.2 Duration as a Creative Lever

Custom mode's duration slider runs 10 to 360 seconds. Short durations are perfect for stings, loops and logo moments; long ones let a full verse-chorus arc breathe.

30-Second Brand Sting

Prompt

Upbeat 30-second jingle — bright ukulele, handclaps, a whistled hook that lands clean at the end. Friendly, sunny, instantly hummable.

Instrumental on, duration 30s. A sting lives or dies on its ending — 'lands clean' tells the arrangement to resolve.
